Dirt Vegas: A skyline across the boulevard

For weeks our train passengers stepped off at Sunset station and looked out at a lawn. A fine lawn, I grant you. But a man does not lay rail across a county so his visitors can admire grass. Tonight I bought the land on the far side of Ivy Street and told it, politely, to become a city.

View from the station side: mixed-use blocks along the boulevard with new towers rising behind them.
The view from the station side: shops and flats along the boulevard, new towers behind them.

Two new tiles came first, for ₡179,026. Then a grid of streets running east from Ivy Street, block by block. The blocks facing the station got shops with flats above, because the first thing a visitor sees should have its lights on. Behind them went high-rise housing, then row houses and medium flats further east, then a new avenue of offices and shops along the northern edge. All told, about 2,500 parcels of zoning in a single evening. The housing demand in this town was shouting; for once I answered before it had to repeat itself.

The city noticed. Two signature buildings unlocked while the cranes were still up. The Epicurean Garden, luxury flats over a restaurant, now fronts the station boulevard. Vertigo Square anchors the eastern blocks. I placed a city park and two pocket parks between them, so the new neighbours have somewhere to stand that is not a kerb.

The eastern blocks filling in: row houses, apartments and the new park, cranes still up.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, Dirt Vegas crossed into Big City. I took the reward points and spent them on tourist attractions, and then I did something a careful mayor might not have done. I built the Observation Tower. It cost ₡3.2 million, most of the treasury, and it now stands over the new district like it was always meant to be there. People arriving by train will see it before they see me. That is probably for the best.

Now the parts I would rather not put in writing, which is why I am putting them in writing. The growth outran our electricity. By the end, 61 buildings were short of power. I bought a gas power plant out in the freight district for ₡650,000, and it is running, but it is not yet wired to the city; it needs a high-voltage line to a transformer, and I ran out of evening. Our treasury is down to ₡411,353, though the monthly budget is in the black and will refill it. I also unlocked trams and built a depot and a tram station next to the train station. There is no track yet. The first attempt to lay it did not take, and I would rather do it properly than leave a rail to nowhere. A depot with nothing to send out is a monument to optimism, and Dirt Vegas has one of those already.

The lawn is gone, and I will not pretend to miss it. Tonight a tower looks down on streets that did not exist this afternoon, half of them still waiting for the power to reach them. Leave a light on for them, Dirt Vegas. I am going to go find the cable.
